Title:

Theme: Principal Farms, Houses and Monuments in Ewyas Lacy

Date:

Up to the 1900s

In 1908 a Royal Commission on Historical Monuments was established to ‘make an inventory of the Ancient and Historical Monuments and Constructions connected with or illustrative of the contemporary culture, civilization and conditions of life of the people in England, excluding Monmouthshire, from the earliest times to 1700.’

Volume I of the Herefordshire inventory, covering the South-West of the County including the hundred of Ewyas Lacy, was completed in 1930 and published in 1931. In addition to a variety of prehistoric, Roman and other earthworks and monuments, the Commission identified ecclesiastical and secular buildings of particular historic interest in each of the parishes of Ewyas Lacy. This latter part of the inventory has been used as the basis for the list of over 170 named properties included in this theme paper, although others have been added where we have discovered other historical records of significant interest.

As a minimum, the description of each property given in the Commission’s report is reproduced and can be seen by following the links in the lists below. Additional information for many properties can be found by entering the property name in the site search engine to find individual documents and references. For some farms and houses in Ewyas Lacy we have also been able to assemble collections of Deeds and other papers summarised from original documents held in private hands. These records provide a history of the properties and their owners over an extended period of time. They are more detailed and informative than our normal records that are based on single documents, and we have therefore included specific links below to make them more easily accessible. Certain larger properties and estates have even more detailed records presented elsewhere on the website as themes, collections or research papers in their own right; relevant links to these are also included below.

Many of the records on our website summarise legal documents describing a property-related transaction, for example a lease, a freehold sale or a mortgage agreement. These provide legal evidence of “Title” to a specific property and frequently give names of the people involved as buyers, sellers, mortgage providers, and witnesses, often including evidence of family descent. They may also include place names, both of farm holdings and fields as used in past times. The information presented should therefore be of use to those interested in family history as well as the history of particular dwellings or properties.

Names and locations of the principal properties in each parish, including modern Ordnance Survey map references, are given below; click on the links to access descriptions. The prefix in brackets is the RCHM reference number where applicable.
