Digital Archive: Roman Relics at Bacton

Place name:

Golden Valley

Date:

c.340

Description:

Part of the Eddie Thomas collection, describing a Roman coin of Constantine II found by his relatives at Bush-Llwyn Farm, Bacton and its possible provenance. It is suggested that the presence of the coin helps pinpoint the existence and routes of Roman roads in the Bacton area, on the grounds that such a single coin [as opposed to a hoard] is likely to have been lost by a traveller on such roads.

The coin is lodged with Hereford Museum and recorded in the records of archaeological finds for the County.

Correspondence by Eddie Thomas with English Heritage regarding their researches into Roman Roads in the area is shown below, together with their annotated maps indicating related archaeological studies and the routes they have deduced regarding possible Roman roads of the period.
