Description:

WALTERSTONE is a parish, on the river Monnow and the borders of Monmouthshire, 1 ½ miles north from the Pandy station on the Newport, Abergavenny and Hereford section of the Great Western railway and 15 south-west from Hereford, in the Hereford division of the county, hundred of Ewyas Lacy, Dore and Bredwardine rural district, petty sessional division of Dore, county court district of Abergavenny, rural deanery of Abbey Dore, and archdeaconry and diocese of Hereford. The church of St. Mary, anciently dedicated to St. Peter, is an old building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a double bell gable containing 2 bells: the church was completely restored about 1895, and affords 100 sittings. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1761; marriages, 1777; burials, 1786. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £203, including 36 acres of glebe, in the gift of P. B. Barneby esq. J.P. and held since 1930 by the Rev. Harry Astbury L.Th. of Durham University, who is also vicar of Clodock, and resides at Longtown. At Walterstone Common is a small Methodist chapel, built in 1856, seating 80 persons. There are two camps in the parish and near the church is a circular moat. Alt-Yrynys, the principal farmhouse, was once the residence of William Cecil Lord Burleigh K.C. lord high treasurer to Queen Elizabeth, and still retains some remains of its ancient grandeur. The Marquess of Abergavenny is lord of the manor, but the land is mostly owned by the occupiers. The soil is mostly clay; subsoil, clay and rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,240 acres of land and 14 of water; population in 1931, 121.
