Place name:

Date:

1628

Description:

Documents

1. Will dated 20 September 1626
Instructs that first all debts and funeral expenses be paid.
Beneficiaries:
To daughter, Johan, one cow, a 2 year old heifer and 20/- for a bed covering; the 20/- to be taken from a £5 bond owed the testator by Harry Lloid of the Clothye. The balance of £4 from the above bond is left to her 4 children equally distributed between them and the interest on the £4 to be used for their maintenance. [presumably, although this is not specified, it is intended that the children should not get their £1 until they reach a certain age].
To reputed son, John, a cow and a 2 year old heifer together with all his weaving looms and equipment.
To son in law, Phe [Phillip] Lloide and daughter Sibell his now wife all the household stuff which they can pass on to their children. If they have no children anything not worn out can be passed to Johan or her children.

Executor: Son in law, Phe Lloide.

[As this is a copy of the will there is no testator's mark or signature nor are there witness signatures or marks. There is, however, at the bottom of the page and in a different hand from the body of the will the remark 'Tests. to the making of this will Morgan Thomas & Thomas Jenyngs wth others'.]

  Date of   probate:
1 April 1628

2. Inventory: dated 25 March1628; valued at £41  3  10 [but comes to £39  4  10d]. Appraisers: Charles Jenings, Lewis Web, George Lloide & Thomas Jenyngs.

Observations:

His Inventory which is reproduced below, interestingly lists some of his essential weaving tools such as looms, slayers and a warping trough. The inventory also lists a bow and a sheaf of arrows, an unusual find in Ewyas Lacy where weaponry has not been a feature of personal inventories. By this date bows and arrows were obsolete as weapons for the militias of England .

His inventory is reproduced below with modern spelling.
