In the Cold War years Newton had a special place in local Civil Defence planning. An Emergency Field Kitchen was built in the Orchard of Newhouse Farm. Here the ladies of the parish test it out. For many years it was used to cook the ‘hot dogs’ at the annual Summer Fete
