Place name: | Craswall |
Date: | 1792 - 1808 |
Description:
We are grateful to Peter Prosser for contributing three records relating to the sale of the Birches and Maes Lawen containing images of the original documents and transcriptions of each.
The demise explains how Walter Prosser borrowed £100 from Sir George Cornewall in 1792. He put the Birches up as security and obliged his son, Thomas Prosser, to add his farm, Maes Lawen, as additional security.
The sale of the Birches took place in 1808 by means of a Lease and Release. The lease was a simple lease of both properties at a nominal sum. It states that the Birches was occupied by Thomas Prosser and Maes Lawen by William Pritchard. William was possibly a brother-in-law to Thomas. The sale was completed the day after the Lease by the Release . This gives a full account of the loan and the reason for the eventual sale. Walter died intestate without repaying the loan. Thomas is described as his only son and was obliged to sell both farms to cover the outstanding debt.
Observations:
An explanation of the Lease/ Release process is available elsewhere on the website.
