Register of Baptisms

The Register of Baptisms contains details of 353 baptisms. The first was on the 10th November 1849 and the last at the time of this transcription on 23rd September 2001. This transcription was made in February 2002 for the purpose of an exhibition of Parish History to be held in connection with the Church Room Restoration Project.

Over the years many clergymen have conducted Baptisms at the Church. Some being the regular incumbent, others visiting clergy. Among those making regular entries are:

                       Rev. Joseph Walker Jenkins.

                                   November 1849 to September 1860.

                       Rev. P.H. Steruxchup.

                                   June 1861 to October 1863

                       Rev. G.V.Collison.

                                   May 1865 to August 1884

                       Rev.W.S.Sellan.

                                   August 1886 to February 1888

                       Rev. George John Tuck.

                                   June 1888 to April 1934

                       Rev. W. Ellam.

                                   July 1935 to September 1942

                       Rev. D.P. Richards.

                                   October 1943 to March 1964

                       Rev. Arthur Rowlands.

                                   August 1966 to November1966

                       Rev. D.B.Gwiilyns-Jones.

                                   August 1970 to August 1972

                       Rev. Frank Rodgers, Vicar.

                                   August 1984 to Present.

This transcription is in two parts. Firstly a copy of the 353 entries and secondly an index by surname of those baptised. Some entries are numbered but the sequence is inconsistent, date and year best trace entries. Some entries in the Register have supplementary or additional information. Where this occurs a second line of detail is added to the copy.

The majority of the Baptisms are those of infants. It appears to have been customary, in the earlier years, to have an infant baptised 2-6 weeks after birth. Some were done within a week of birth. Some entries are endorsed “Private Baptism”, this may have been carried out in the home of a child when circumstances warranted. There are some adult baptisms.

The following annotations have been used:

?          Where reading of an entry is uncertain.

(---)      Where an entry item is blank.

(++)     Where details are too long for convenient copying, see Register for fuller information.

(Rec:) An abbreviation for “Received into the Church”.

The Register of Baptisms is contained in a single volume. It is in a purpose-printed book, half-bound in grey cloth and marbled paper. It measures 19cm by 24cm by 1.5cm. The front cover has a printed paper label
