Will of Jenkyn Madye, Yeoman: Transcription
This transcription was made from the original by Dewi Bowen Williams B.A., and is reproduced here with his kind permission.
It is an unusual and important document in that it recites in detail the testator’s land holdings [including field names], husbandry equipment, livestock and domestic possessions and encompasses a wide range of named beneficiaries. It thus provides a snapshot of the land ownership, farming practices and family names of people in and around the Upper Escley Valley at the beginning of the C17th. The domestic inventory also gives a rare insight into the lifestyle of a well to do yeoman farmer in the area at that time, occupying a substantial property that became the modern day Pikes Farm.
