WHAT'S NEW?

Update: 1st July 2010

Welcome to our 'What's new?' page

We are adding new material to our website all the time, and we would like our visitors to come back regularly and enjoy adding to their knowledge of Ewyas Lacy as much as we do. But amongst many thousands of existing records it may not be easy to find what has changed since your last visit, so we have developed this page to help point you in the right directions. We expect to produce a fresh 'What's new?' page about quarterly, or whenever a significant body of new work has been uploaded.

ELSG Website

We are delighted to have reached an agreement with Herefordshire Record Office to photograph selected archive documents relating to the parishes of Ewyas Lacy and make them available as Digital Image Collections on this website. This follows our earlier successful cooperation along similar lines with the Gwent Record Office.
We will be working closely with HRO staff to ensure that copyright and other data protection issues are fully respected. We are very grateful for their support for this new initiative, which will make a variety of important records much more easily accessible to local people and researchers alike. Our first working visit in June was very productive, and we expect to publish a significant volume of new material on the website in the coming months as the project continues.

Documents

Historical document summaries are the heart of our website, underpinning all of the search and browsing facilities. There is a rolling programme of work to capture new material from both public archive sources and private local collections. Recent additions include:

  • Coronation bonfire in Longtown, 1911
  • National Archives A2A catalogue entries for Ewyas Lacy
  • Newspaper report on the results of the sale of the Urishay Estate, 1913
  • Abstract of Title for Glan Olchon House, Longtown
  • Enclosure of Urishay Common
  • Fight to the death at Lower Maescoed
  • Hereford Times report of a protest meeting at Newton School, 1913
  • Estate Agents' particulars for a variety of properties in St Margarets and Newton
  • An Account of Rowland Vaughan, 1559 - 1629
  • Record of a visit to Old Court Farm, Wayne Herbert quarry and Clodock church in 1932
  • Introduction to iron making in south west Herefordshire in the 17th century

Themes

Themes not only allow us to highlight important topics, but also give freedom to 'tell a story' and bring together different facets of history that otherwise might not readily be connected. They reflect individual interests as well, and occasionally arise from research on other topics that leads into curious historical byways. Recent additions and updates include:
Local Iron Making in the 17th Century

Collections

Collections include transcriptions of historical documents, records of the recollections of local people, research papers on local history topics and collections of digital images.

Transcriptions

Transcriptions are important not only because original manuscripts are sometimes difficult to read, but also because the full text becomes searchable on the website. New transcriptions recently uploaded include

Research

An important objective of our website is to provide fresh insights into the history of the local area, based on analysis and interpretation of the historical records. The resulting research papers are also updated from time to time as and when significant new information becomes available. There are no new papers or updates this quarter, but the wide range of existing material can be seen on the Collections page of the website.

Digital Image Collections

Local photographs of people and places are important records of relatively recent times. However, our images collections also extend to photographs of original archive material. These are being taken as part of our own work aimed at preserving and making accessible a diverse range of historical documents and publications. Recent additions to our Digital Images Collections can be viewed by following the links below.
