Title:

Index of Private Document Collections

Much of our understanding of the past is based on records that have been preserved in libraries and official archives of various types. This is all very well, but has the drawback that more often than not the records selected by the officials concerned have for obvious reasons tended to deal with the activities of the wealthy and the powerful. They therefore arguably give a somewhat distorted view of history and cast relatively little light on the lives of the vast majority of people.

We are however fortunate to have been offered access to a number of private collections of documents during our researches into Ewyas Lacy, which otherwise are not open to the public. These typically provide a more intimate picture of local history, with a diverse assortment of records ranging across generations of the same family and/or the descent of a particular property. We are particularly grateful to the owners of these collections who have allowed us access and agreed to their documents being made available on the Ewyas Lacy Study Group website.

We have summarised the content of the documents in each collection and these summaries can be viewed by following the links in the index of private collections given below. We have also been given permission to photograph some [but not all] of these collections, and pictures of the original documents in those cases can also be viewed under the ‘Digital Images Collections’ heading on the Collections page of the website.
